The Great Dane evolved in Germany and was used for hunting boar and stags. They are among the tallest of dog breeds; their powerful body is fast and agile. Start training them from an early age, before they get to large to handle. They make good watchdogs, as their size alone is daunting. They do better when housed as part of the family, they do not do well as outside dogs.
They are a gentle dog with lots to offer if you have the room for them. They are quite patient with children and they make a very loyal, affectionate family pet.

Grooming- the coat is easy to take care of with a brush and a wash when needed. Keep nails trimmed.

Exercise- for the first 9 months Danes should be exercised as little as possible as their bones are growing and developing, but they do need to be taken out to socialized. After this moderate exercise is needed.

Health- This breed can suffer from bloat, hip dysplasia and genetic heart problems. Follow breeders advise on what their diet should be. Dane's are a very rapid growing dog and diet is critical for proper development. For Diet and other general dog health information Health/Nutrition
