Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Breed Information

Group 2: Terriers

Energy Level: Moderate

Original Function: vermin hunting, herding, guardian

Temperament: Good-tempered, spirited & game. Full of confidence & humour; a delightful, affectionate, intelligent companion.

Recommended for: Most People/families.

Be Aware: All puppies need companionship & human interaction to reduce boredom

Lifespan: 12-14 years


Height: Dogs 46-49 cms (18-191/2 ins) measured at the withers;
slightly less.

Weight: Dogs 16-20.5 kgs (35-45 lbs);
bitches somewhat less.

Colour: A good clear wheaten. A shade of ripening wheat.

Coat: Soft and silky. Neither woolly nor wiry

General Appearance: Medium-sized, compact, upstanding terrier well covered with a soft, wheaten-coloured, natural coat that falls in loose curls or waves. An active, short-coupled dog, strong & well built; well balanced in structure & movement, not exaggerated in any way. Standing four square with head and tail up, giving the appearance of a happy dog, full of character


The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is believed to have originated in Ireland, they were a very versatile dog as their duties were of many, being a good herder of cattle, guard dogs and good shooting companions for hunters.
They are a very friendly dog and love to be around their family all the time, they are intelligent and easy to train.
They will bark at strangers but they are not as barky as most terriers.

Grooming- Regular brushing is needed from when they are puppies to keep the coat free from knots. Bath when necessary or dry shampoo.

Exercise- Regular exercise is needed to keep them fit and happy. They will enjoy good play times or long walks as long as they are with you.

Health- This breed does not suffer any major health issues in Australia.
