About This Breed

The Affenpinscher is a member of the toy family and originated in Germany several centuries ago. In German affe means monkey referring to the monkey like expression that is the hallmark of this breed.

They are the smallest of the pinschers and schnauzers, devoted to their families and very alert, This makes them an excellent watchdog. Intelligent and easy to train, you must make sure to show you are in charge by training and activities. Young children must be supervised when handling this breed, as they are very small puppies.

General Characteristics

Appearance: Rough coated, sturdy build, a mischievous monkey-like expression. Small but not delicate.

Temperament: Loyal and loving companion; watchful of strangers and fearless toward aggressors.

Characteristics: Lively and self-confident.

Colour: Black. Grey shading is allowed.

Coat: Correct coat needs no trimming, rough and harsh in texture, short and dense on some parts of body and shaggy on others. Longer on shoulders, neck and head where loose shaggy hair stands away from skull framing the eyes, nose and chin giving desired monkey-like appearance.

Grooming: Brushing once or twice a week will remove the dead hair and keep the coat free of knots.

Exercise: Regular exercise, daily active walks and off lead runs.

Health: Healthy breed but some need attention their teeth and can be susceptible to eye ulcers and infections.
