Bullmastiff

About This Breed

The Bullmastiff was developed in Britain by crossing the Mastiff and the Bulldog. In those days the Bulldog was active and agile, so the combination gave us a large and very strong dog, which was used for tracking. They were also widely used by gamekeepers on large estates to deter poachers.

These dogs are very protective of their family and other household pets. They have to be socialised from an early age. The Bullmastiff will only accept strangers if they are introduced to them by someone they trust. Intruders will be quickly halted in their tracks. It is not really a breed for the novice owner, due to its strength, stubborn and over protective nature.

General Characteristics

Appearance: Large sized, powerful build body, symmetrical, showing great strength, but not cumbersome; sound and active. Ears are high set & hang to the side of the large head. Muzzle is short & broad. Dark eyes. Tail long.

Temperament: High spirited, alert and faithful.

Characteristics: Powerful, enduring, active and reliable.

Colour: Any shade of brindle, fawn or red; colour to be pure and clear. A slight white marking on chest permissible. Other white markings undesirable. Black muzzle essential, toning off towards eyes, with dark markings around eyes contributing to expression.

Coat: Short and hard, weather resistant, lying flat to body. Long, silky or woolly coats highly undesirable.

Grooming: Relatively easy, a grooming mitt is all that is required to remove any dead and loose hair.

Exercise: This dog should not have long walks or be allowed a lot of free exercise until it is at least 12 months old. Remember that even when this dog is 6 months old, and is relatively large, it is still a puppy.

Too much exercise too young can lead to bone and joint related health problems in later life. They have an average demand for exercise, only requiring a few walks per day. They do enjoy exercise and games with the family.

Health: This breed is fairly hardy but some can suffer from bloat, hip dysplasia and eye problems.
