About This Breed

The Lowchen is a member of the Bichon’s family, which consist of the Bichon Frise, Maltese, the Bolognese and the Havanese these breeds were developed into separate breeds from common ancestry. Even though it is recognized as a French breed, they are known in both France and Spain. They are also known as the Little Lion Dog, due to their clip they are usually clipped in.

A high-spirited dog that loves to run and play but they also enjoy curling up in your lap and just being around you. They are intelligent, which makes them easy to train. They make wonderful family pets and can also adapt to apartment living but adequate exercise must be given.

General Characteristics

Appearance: Small sized sturdy body, dark round eyes, ears moderate length with long fringing. Tail medium length, clipped with a tuft of hair resembling a plume, coat clipped in the traditional loin clip.

Temperament: Intelligent, affectionate showing no sign of aggression.

Characteristics: This is a lively, inquisitive, affectionate dog. It is a mixture of playful spirit and calm soul mate, a good companion for a quiet family. It is willing to please and responsive to commands, and it is devoted to its family.

Colour: Any colour or combination of colours.

 

Coat: Fairly long, wavy, never curly. Single coat of soft texture.

Grooming: Regular brushing is needed and to keep them in the traditional loin clip they will need to be clipped regularly. The coat can be clipped to a length all over to suit the owner’s lifestyle and keep grooming to a minimum. They do not shed their coats as readily as other breeds, and this makes them attractive to families who suffer asthma or allergies. Bath when necessary.

Exercise: regular daily walks and plays will keep them fit and happy.
