The Maltese has been around since or even before Roman times, their main purpose is just to be glamorous and women especially favoured them, and they appeared in many famous paintings.
They are a lively and alert dog and will let you know if strangers are around. They are intelligent and easy to train. They love to be groomed and fussed over and to be around your company.
Appearance: Small sized body. Dark oval eyes, pigmentation of nose and eye rims should be black. Ears hang to the side of the head. Tail coated and curls up over onto the back. Should be smart, lively and alert. The action must be free, without extended weaving.
Temperament: Affectionate, Lively, Alert
Characteristics: Sweet tempered and very intelligent.
Colour: White, sometimes lemon or beige.
Coat: Should be good length, but not impeding action, of silky texture, not in any way woolly and should be straight. It should not be crimped and there should be no woolly undercoat.
Grooming: Daily combing and brushing is needed to keep the long coat knot free and looking good. If preferred you may have them clipped to keep the coat more manageable. Clean eyes regularly to prevent staining on the coat. Bath or dry shampoo when needed, making sure you dry them well.
Exercise: regular walks and plays are all that is needed to keep these dogs happy and healthy.
Health: This breed can suffer from eye problems.
