About This Breed

The Rhodesian Ridgeback originated in Southern Africa. It was in what is now known as Zimbabwe that these dogs became prized for their ability to hunt lion and other large game.

These strong, active dogs make good family pets and they are a great watchdog. They are intelligent and good-natured, are easy to train, but should be treated gently so not to break their spirit or make them aggressive.

General Characteristics

Appearance: Body, well balanced, strong, muscular, agile & active, with elegance & soundness with no tendency towards massiveness. Dark or amber eyes in accordance with nose colour which can be black or brown. Ears hang to the side of the head. Tail moderate length. All should have the unique ridge on their back.

Temperament: Dignified, intelligent, aloof with strangers, but showing no aggression or shyness.

Characteristics: The ridge is unique of the breed. The ridge must be clearly defined, symmetrical and tapering towards the haunch. It must start immediately behind the shoulders and continue to the hip (haunches) bones. The ridge must contain only two crowns, identical and opposite each other. The lower edges of the crowns must not extend further down the ridge than one-third of its length. A good average width of the ridge is 5 cm (2ins).

Colour: Light wheaten to red wheaten. A little white on the chest and toes is permissible, but excessive white hairs here, on belly or above toes is undesirable. A dark muzzle and ears permissible. Excessive black hairs throughout the coat are highly undesirable.

Coat: Hair – Should be short and dense, sleek and glossy in appearance but neither woolly nor silky.

Grooming: Their short coat only requires a brush now and then. Bath when needed.

Exercise: they have a great stamina and needed plenty of exercise.

Health: This breed can be susceptible to Hip Dysplasia and Dermoid Sinus. Weight can also be a problem.
