About This Breed

This breed is a member of the Spitz family; the Samoyede tribe of Siberia used them as sled dogs. During storms they borrow into the snow leaving only their nose exposed, they cover this with their tail using it to act as a filter through which they can breathe.

They make excellent family pets, as they get on well with children and are great companions, as they love the human company. They are easy to train and do well at obedience.

General Characteristics

Appearance: Medium sized body. Almond shaped eyes, pigmentation or rims and nose should be black. Ears small and erect. Tail bushy, curls up over onto the back.

Temperament: Known as the smiling dog, this breed is dependable and happy. Friendly and loyal dog.

Characteristics: The Samoyed is intelligent, alert, full of action but above all displaying affection towards all mankind.

Colour: Pure white or white cream.

Coat: Thick soft undercoat. Longer harsh outer coat.

Grooming: Regular brushing is needed to keep the coat knot free and a little extra care when they shed their coat. Dry shampoo or bath when necessary.

Exercise: regular exercise is needed to keep them happy and healthy, long walks off lead runs etc. but don’t overdo it in the warmer weather.

Health: This breed is generally sound but some can be prone to hip dysplasia and can also suffer from diabetes.
