About This Breed
Sealyhams are yet another breed which was developed with a specific purpose in mind during the 1800s. The squire of Sealyham, Captain John Edwardes, is said to have used West Highland White Terriers and Dandie Dinmont’s in the creation of a terrier with courage and conformation to confront larger vermin such as polecats and badgers. They were bred to work along other Sealyhams in hunting packs.
Today’s Sealyham retains its self-confidence and courage but seems a much more amiable dog than his working ancestors. They are fairly quiet, but they will bark to announce animal & human visitors. They are not a smelly dog, they produce a very low amount of dander and there is very little oil in the coat, due to this they can make good pets for people with allergies, Sealyham is an Asthma friendly breed.
General Characteristics
Appearance: Medium sized, neat, strong dog. Neck is long and muscular while the legs are short and stocky. Skull slightly domed & wide between ears. Nose is black. Eyes are dark, well set, round, of medium size. Ears are medium sized, slightly rounded at tip and carried at side of cheek.
Temperament: Alert and fearless but of friendly disposition.
Characteristics: Sturdy, game and workmanlike.
Colour: All white or white with lemon, brown, blue or badger pied markings on head and ears. Much black and heavy ticking undesirable.
Coat: Long, hard and wiry topcoat with weather-resistant undercoat.
Grooming: A brush once a week while in coat is all they need, and a bath when needed. They shed coat twice a year and it’s a good idea to get a stripping comb and remove all the dead hair.
Exercise: They need moderate but regular exercise to stay in shape.
