About This Breed

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is believed to have originated in Ireland. A very versatile dog, being a good herder of cattle, guardian and hunting companion.

They are a very friendly dog and love to be around their family all the time, becoming bored without human interaction. Intelligent and easy to train, they will bark at strangers but they are not as yappy as most terriers.

General Characteristics

Appearance: Medium-sized, compact, upstanding terrier well covered with a soft, wheat coloured, natural coat that falls in loose curls or waves. An active, short-coupled dog, strong & well built; well balanced in structure & movement, not exaggerated in any way. Standing four square with head and tail up, giving the appearance of a happy dog, full of character.

Temperament: Good-tempered, spirited & game. Full of confidence & humour; a delightful, affectionate, intelligent companion.

Colour: A good clear wheaten. A shade of ripening wheat.

Coat: Soft and silky. Neither woolly nor wiry.

Grooming: Regular brushing is needed from when they are puppies to keep the coat free from knots. Bath when necessary or dry shampoo.

Exercise: Regular exercise is needed to keep them fit and happy. They will enjoy good play times or long walks as long as they are with you.
