About This Breed

There are two completely different breeds of Welsh Corgi – the Cardigan and the Pembroke. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is the original Welsh herding dog probably having been brought to the British Isles from Central Europe between 3,000 and 4,000 years ago. Tough, strong, courageous and tenacious as well as agile, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi makes an outstanding companion.

General Characteristics

Appearance: Small sized body. Wedged shaped head with dark eyes and erect ears. Long tail.

Temperament: Alert, intelligent, steady, not shy or aggressive.

Characteristics: Alert, active and intelligent.

Colour: Red, Sable, Fawn, Black/Tan with White on the chest, neck and legs. Cardigans can also be brindle or merle with white.

Coat: Straight, dense and medium length.

Grooming: Males drop coat once a year and female twice. During these times extra brushing is needed otherwise their medium length coat only requires a brush once a week and a wash when needed.

Exercise: Regular walking and play.

Health: This breed can be prone to back problems due to their short legs and long backs.
