About This Breed

A member of the Arctic Spitz family, the Vallhund was bred as a herding dog. They almost became extinct but in the mid-20th century a group of breeders restored the numbers of this active little breed.

They are an intelligent, affectionate and active little dog that make great family companions and are extremely loyal. They are aloof towards other dogs and people until they get to know them, but should not be aggressive. They make good watch dogs.

General Characteristics

Appearance: Small sized body, wedged shaped head with dark eyes & erect ears. Very short tail. Small, powerful, sturdily built working dog, with fairly long body. (Ratio of height at withers to length of body 2:3).

Temperament: Friendly, active, eager to please.

Characteristics: Appearance and expression denote a watchful, alert, energetic dog.

Colour: Shades of grey brown & fawn, up to 1/3rd of the dog’s colour may be white.

Coat: Outer coat – Straight and medium length. Undercoat – Soft and thick.

Grooming: Extremely low maintenance, weekly brushing and a bath a few times a year, when needed.

Exercise: They enjoy plenty of exercise and like to be doing something as they are an energetic dog. Regular walks and off lead runs will help keep them happy and healthy.
